Brian Magid keyed a second-half burst that propelled George Washington University to a 71-60 win over the University of Massachusetts tonight in an Eastern Eight game and regular-season finale. o

The Colonials, 5-5 in the conference and 15-10 overall, will travel to Pittsburgh to play the Panthers at 8 p.m. Tuesday night in an opening-round game of the Eastern Eight tournament. Massachusetts fell to 2-23, 0-10 in the league and will play at Villanova Tuesday.

GW trailed 44-43 when Magid keyed a 14-4 burst to give the Colonials the lead for good. Magid hit two 25-foot jump shots and two free throws in the streak that gave GW a 57-48 lead with 8:05 to play. GW upped its lead to 68-54 before the Minutemen closed the gap at the end.

"We were a little sloppy in the first half, but we handled the ball better in the second half," commented GW coach Bob Tallent. "We won the game with our spread offense late in the game."

The Colonials went to the spread once they got their 57-48 lead. GW was able to control the ball while running time off the clock.
