Alexandria's Dukes fell deeper into the Carolina League's Virginia Division cellar by collecting a mere five hits in dropping a pair of seven-inning games to Peninsula, 3-0 and 5-2, last night at Four Mile Run Park. Alexandria has lost eight straight.

Leroy Smith hurled a one-hitter in the opener, striking out five and walking two Dukes for this third win of the season against one defeat.

In the nightcap the Pilots pushed across the four runs in the fourth inning to steal the sweep.

Joe Bruno beat out a bunt to reach first to start the fourth. Ray Borucki singled, and Bruno advanced to third. Will Culmer drew a walk to load the bases and, with Russ Hamrick at bat, Bruno was tagged trying to steal home, an apparent out -- except that a balk was called on pitcher Tim Lewis, letting Bruno score.

Hamrick walked, and Ron Smith's single drove in two runs. With Himmrick on third, the Pilots executed a double steal, Hamrick scoring the final run of the inning.

Carlos Matamoros' triple scored Jeff Rudolph and Roberto Dennis for Alexandria in the sixth before Alicea Miguel retired the side and Kelly Faulk came on in seventh to end Duke hopes.
