Skipper's Friend sped the fastest 1 1/16-mile of the Pimlico meeting and Crow's Nest held off T.V. Hill to win the City Of Baltimore Handicap at Pimlico today. Skipper's Friend clocked 1:41 4/5 while Crow's Nest required two ticks of a second more in Pimlico's closing-day feature.

Skipper's Friend was sent to the front by jockey Phil Grove in the first half of the headliner and widened to a 10-length triumph. Knightly Marvin ran evenly to be second, four lengths ahead of the favored Dear Rossi. Skipper's Friend returned $8.40 after posting his fourth victory of the year. sThe 4-year-old colt has earned more than $60,000.

Crow's Nest was second out of the gate in the second half of the Baltimore, but was soon displced by Isella. Entering the stretch, jockey Carlos Barrera asked the Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt -- owned 4-year-old for steam and he drew away.

At the 16th pole Barrera had to put his mount to severe pressure to hold off the late challenge of the favorite, T.V. Hill, which missed by a half length.

A crowd of 13,331 wagered $1,696,584, a slight rise in both categories for the 61-day meeting. Those figures include a record 83,455 on Preakness day.

Jockey Mario Pino was the leading rider of the meeting with 60 wins. King T. Leatherbury led the trainers with 34 victories.
