Pete Rose's single scored Greg Gross from second base with the winning run in the top of the 11th inning last night to lead Philadelphia to a 5-4 victory over Montreal that pulled the Phillies within one game of the first-place Expos in the National League East.

In Pittsburgh, Phil Garner singled and came around to score the winning run on Mike Easler's fielder's choice grounder in the 10th inning as the Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 3-2.

Bob Horner hit a tie-breaking two-run single in a five-run fifth inning and Atlanta broke the game open with six more runs in the sixth, beating the Houston Astros, 13-4, in atlanta. It was the Braves' fifth victory in six games.

In New York, Lenny Randle hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning and Bruce Sutter earned his major-league leading 18th save to spark the Chicago Cubs to a 4-3 victory over the Mets.

In West Coast games, Ed Whitson pitched a six-hitter for his fifth straight victory and rookie Rich Murray pounded a two-run homer snapping an 0-for-29 slump, as the host San Francisco Giants posted, a 4-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds; and Dave Winfield slugged his eighth homer and drove in three runs for San Diego and three Padre pitchers combined to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers and Jerry Reuss, 9-2.
