Julio Franco drove in two runs with three hits and Herb Orensky hit a two-run homer as the Peninsula Pirates edged Alexandria, 6-5, in a sloppily played game last night at Four Mile Run Park.

Peninsula scored two runs in the first inning off Duke starter and loser Wes Williams (4-3). Franco drove in a run with a single and Will Culmer's ground out scored the other.

The Duke took a 3-2 lead in the third when recently acquired Earl Neal (10 RBI in five games) hit a sacrifice fly and Bob Boyce drove in two runs with a bases-loaded double.

Peninsula tied the game in the fifth, but Culmer's error, one of four for the Pirates, enabled the Dukes to take a 4-3 edge. Orensky hit his fifth homer of the season to give the Pirates a 5-4 lead in the sixth, and Franco's run-scoring single chased Williams in the seventh.

Alexandria added a run in the seventh when Neal scored on a passed ball. The Duke loaded the bases later in the inning, but Ted Jackson's long drive to center field was caught against the fence by Pirate Joe Bruno.
