Carlos Matamoros went three for three and drove in two runs last night as the Alexandria Dukes defeated the Penisula Pilots for the first time in 10 tries this season, 8-5, at Four Mile Run Park.
Alexandria banged out 11 hits, including nine off loser Roy Smith (8-5), who earlier in the season fired back-to-back one-hitters against the Dukes.
Alexandria came out swinging tonight, scoring four runs on four hits in the first inning.
Greg Jemison walked, stole second and went to third on Matamoros' first hit. Matamoros stole second, Chris Hudson fanned, Earl Neal walked and Bob Boyce beat out an infield hit for a run. Bruss Bowman followed with a two-run single and moved to third on an error by right fielder Randy Greer. aRoberto Dennis' line single scored the fourth run.
Consecutive doubles by Matamoros and Hudson produced a run in the second, Matamoros' single in the fourth scored another and Neal's titanic home run in the fifth gave the Dukes a 7-2 lead. Matamoros drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Tim Lewis evened his record at 8-8, allowing four hits in 7 1/3 innings. Jeff Cary gained his second save with 1 2/3 innings in relief.
Will Culmer of Pennisula went two for two with two RBI, including a long homer in the sixth.
