Jeris White, the cornerback obtained from Tampa Bay, will be playing without a Redskin contract when he begins his bid to beat Joe Lavender out of a starting spot -- unless things change in a hurry.

As it stands, White figures to join Benny Malone as the only unsigned Redskins participating in training camp starting Saturday at Dickinson College.

White will be heading for Carlisle under the option year of his Buc contract unless he and agent Howard Slusher -- the hard-nosed one -- and General Manager Bobby Beathard suddenly see eye to eye.

"We've each made an offer and Howard has to take it to Jeris again," Beathard told The Post's Paul Attner. "I'd like to get Jeris signed before camp or as soon as we can, but I don't pay him the kind of money they are asking.

"Could this be prolonged? Probably, although Howard and I get along real well. We've worked things out in the past with other people."

If it doesn't work out, White could become a free agent in February, as would Malone if he survives the 1980 cuts. Among the rest of the squad, Beathard said only Dallas Hickman had yet to agree to terms, and he will be meeting with the team defensive handyman today. . .
