Navy Coach George Welsh, waiting for several of his regulars to recover from last season's injuries, had two more key players hurt -- by ankle sprains -- as the Mids concluded two-a-day workouts yesterday.
Linebackers Mike Kronzer, the team's leading tackler in 1979, and top reserve Tommy Fitzgerald joined the injured list. Flanker Dave Dent (knee surgery), Troy Mitchell (hamstring), nose guard Terry Huxel (ankle surgery) and offensive tackle Rick Welch (knee surgery) have been restricted to one workout a day.
"We're still working in the areas where we have problems," Welsh said. "We've only been in pads two days and the heat has slowed us a bit. We're alternating a lot of players and haven't decided on some positions."
One position still up for grabs is quaterback. Fred Reitzel, Tony Colao and Tom Tarquino are still battling for the No. 1 spot.
"I'm using all three each day in different situations," Welsh said. "We don't have a first string QB yet."
Welsh also plans to alternate tailbacks Ed Meyers and Mike Sherlock. Kevin Tolbert has bee working at the No. 1 fullback spot, with Duane Flowers, a tailback last year, in reserve.
Navy will hold its first intrasquad scrimmage Saturday.
