Even though Sunday's schedule represents only the last week of the NFL's first month of action, there is at least one key contest involved.
For the New York Jets, their visit to Baltimore has the overtones of a "must" game. Lose this one and the Jets will be 4-0 through the soft part of their schedule. The only team in the '70s to comeback from an 0-4 start and earn a playoff berth was the 1975 Colts. Sunday, the Colts will be a 5-point favorite over the Jets.
Walt Michaels, the coach of the Jets, refuses to point any fingers. The defense had held up until Sunday's collapse against San Fancisco. And, Richard Todd, off to an agonizingly slow start, set a couple of records in the defeat.
This weekend's action: Washington 4 over Seattle, Buffalo and Oakland even, Houston 4 over Cincinnati, Detroit 7 over Minnesota, Miami 8 over New Orleans, Los Nageles 6 over N.Y. Giants, Pittsburg 11 over Chicago, San Francisco 3 over Atlanta, Tampa Bay 4 over Cleveland, Dallas 10 over Green Bay, Philadelphia 6 over St. Louis, Baltimore 5 over N.Y. Jets, San Diego 6 over Kansas City. (Monday) New England 4 over Denver.
