A record field of 180 of the top amateurs in the country will tee off at Congressional Country Club today in a four-day medal tournament for the 78th Middle Atlantic Amateur golf championship.

The field, headed by defending champion Fred Funk of Crofton, will be represented by 22 states and Bermuda, which is sending Hubert Kim of the Bermuda Golf Club, Hamilton. Other players will come in from California, Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Michigan and Georgia.

The list of entrants reads like a who's who of amateur golf, including state champions from Rhode Island, Virginia, Maryland and Ohio as well as the District of Columbia.

Locally, in addition to Funk, the Washington area will be represented by Marty West, former champion and Walker Cup player who has participated in four Masters; Henri deLozier, West's teammate at Columbia Country Club who also has a list of impressive amateur titles; Gary Marlowe of Woodmont, the current Maryland State Amateur champion; Barry McCarty of Belle Haven, the recent District Amateur winner, and such area stars as Jim Castagna, Greg Carpousis, Ed Offterdinger, Regan O'Rourke, Ben Brundred III, Ralph Bogart and Doug Ballenger.

Play will be 18 holes each day through Sunday.
