Second-ranked Ohio State is favored by 11 points to beat No. 11 UCLA today and keep Earle Bruce's coaching record perfect in 15 regular-season college football games with the Buckeyes.
Meanwhile, Coach Paul Bryant is taking the likelihood of his 300th victory the way Alabama is expected to take Kentucky, in stride.
"A 21-point favorite, Alabama will be out to extend the nation's largest current major college winning streak to 25 games, to keep itself ranked No. 1 in the country and, incidentally -- or so Bryant says -- to win No. 300 for the coach. Amos Alonzo Staff holds the all-time record, 315, set during a 51-year career.
In our games involving top teams, Southern California plays host to Arizona State, Texas visits Rice, Notre Dame is at Michigan State, Missouri plays host to Penn State, Florida State visits Nebraska and Florida takes on LSU.
Most of the nation -- and more than 88,000 fans in Ohio Stadium, the Buckeyes' 74th consecutive home sellout -- will get a chance to see Ohio State play UCLA. Last year, in his first season as Woody Hayes' successor, Bruce termed a 17-13 come-from-behind triumph at UCLA one of the turning points in an 11-0 campaign.
"I attached a lot of importance to this game, you better believe it," Bruce said. The Buckeyes, 3-0 like the Bruins, are meeting their second straight member of the top 20.
