When top-seeded Bowie takes the field today against Severna Park in a Maryland state AA soccer semifinal, the Bulldogs will be without playmaker Mike Galoppo.
Galoppo (10 assists, seven goals) is among several injured Bulldog starters. Second-leading goalscorer John Lovell, with nine, Kenny Walls, Jon White and Steve Rounseville are hurting, but probably will play in the 11 a.m. game at Bowie, according to Coach Louis Reck.
Winners of the Prince George's title and Region II championship, the Bulldogs (14-0-0) advanced to the state semifinal with a convincing 3-0 victory over Crossland on Wednesday. Against Crossland, Reck said, he knew the Cavaliers were going to play the long ball. It may be a different story, however, against fourth-seeded Severan Park.
"The closest thing I have to a scouting report is the cousin of a player who goes to school there," said Reck. "It is difficult to scout when you don't know who you will be playing, especially in Anne Arundel County."
Still, Reck is optimistic about the Bulldogs' chances.
Leading goalscorer Brian Colgan, with 13, is healthy and will head the Bowie offense. Scott Kell, who has scored three goals in two playoff games, will be the catalyst in Galoppo's absence. The Bulldog defense is probably amont the strongest in the state, allowing only three goals this season. Goalkeeper Tim Lovell has been excellent in recording 11 shutouts.
In the other AA semifinal, second-seeded Patapsco plays third-ranked Churchill (13-1) at 11 a.m. at Essex Community College.
