The Very One came from off the pace with a furious rush to win the $50,000-added Chrysanthemum Handicap at Laurel Race Course by a head over Producer yesterday.

The Very One had to survive a foul claim by the rider of third-place finisher T.V. Highlights before posting a $3 win mutuel.

The Very One, a fast-closing second to Argument in last Saturday's Washington, D.C. International, was ridden by Vincent Bracciale. The running time for the 1-1/8 miles on the turf course was 1:49-l/5,

Tue victory was the 15th on grass in three years for The Very One, which once raced as a claimer. The 5-year-old mare has won more than $700,000 for owner Helen Polinger.

In the novel Pick Six betting, a payoff of $3,721 resulted when several late scratches cut into the disappointing pool of $20,100. Only $3 in tickets were sold on the winning combination, which paid off on five winners; $95 in tickets paid $39.10 each for four winners. Then because of the scratches, there also was a consolation payoff of $47.40 on $4 worth of tickets.

Meanwhile, the early bird form of betting continued to increase; more than $34,000 was wagered before the start of the races.

The crowd of 13,544 wagered $1,785,962 on the nine-race card.
