Commonwealth Aquatics' Brian Tsuchiya captured three gold medals in three starts and Curl's Sue O'Brien and Starlit's Marc Hagan each took two apiece yesterday in opening-day competition of the 26th annual age group and senior open short course Thanksgiving Swin Meet at George Washington University's Smith Center. Rockville Municipal led Curl and Starlit for team honors.
Tsuchiya struggled a bit in winning the men's senior 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke events. But he whipped the field by half a pool's length in his final event, the 200-yard individual medley.
O'Brien missed her bid for a triple when Joan Costello of the Bowie Bulldogs beat her by two seconds at the finish of the girls' 13 and 14 200-yard individual medley.
Almost 1,000 swimmers were entered in the meet, which was marred by confusion, faulty starting and lack of timers.
Rockville began the day with a flurry, smashing Potomac Valley AAU records in the women's and men's senior 200-yard freestyles.
One individual record fell when Solotar's Lisa Remele broke the Potomac Valley 100 freestyle record, qualifying for the AAU Junior Nationals in the process.
The meet concludes today starting at 6:30 p.m. at Smith Center.
