Virginia used a tight man-to-man defense and Jeff Lamp's 24 points to win its fourth consecutive Virginia Tip-Off Tournament Championship, 77-62, over Virginia Commonwealth in University Hall tonight.

Lamp, the tournament's most valuable player, was joined as an all-tournament selection by teammate Ralph Sampson, who scored 19 points and pulled down 13 rebounds.

The Cavaliers jumped to a 10-point lead only five minutes into the game and extended the lead to 20 points in the next 12 minutes. Lamp scored nine of his 15 first-half points in that stretch. Virginia led, 41-23, at halftime, with the help of reserve center Lewis Latimore's six rebounds.

The Cavs lead by as many as 28 points, 70-42, when Sampson hit an eight-foot turnaround along the baseline with 6:41 left to play. In a span of 1:27, Sampson scored six points and fed an outlet pass to Lee Raker for a layup.

VCU's Danny Kottak kept the Rams from being blown out with his 16 points. Teammate Greg Shropshire added 15.

Lafayette defeated Bucknell, 69-47, in the consolation game. Virginia's Raker, VCU's Kottak, and Lafayette's Mike Whitman joined Lamp and Sampson on the all-tournament squad.
