Rockville Municipal Swim Club fought off a challenge from Curl Swim Club to win the 26th annual Potomac Valley age group and senior open Thanksgiving Swim Meet at George Washington University last night. It was the first time Rockville had won the meet.

More than 400 spectators clogged Smith Center to watch the two clubs outdistance 23 other teams from as far away as New Hampshire.

Burt Hall, nine years the coach of Rockville, said he was somewhat surprised by his club's victory.

"A lot to winning these meets," he said, "is getting organized, and making sure the swimmers get to their events on time."

More than 50 Rockville swimmers have received college scholarships in the club's 13-year existence.

Starlit's Marc Hagen claimed individual honors with five gold medals. Commonwealth's Brian Tsuchiya's bid for a fifth gold was spoiled by Rockville's Eric Judkins in the men's 200-yard freestyle.

Hagen, two days from his 15th birthday, celebrated his last fling in the 13-and-14 age group by taking the 100-yard butterly, the 100 backstroke and the night's final event, the 200 freestyle.

Joan Costello of Bowie was the top female winner, claiming four golds, two each night of the meet.
