More than 250 gymnasts representing 52 teams from 17 states will compete today and Sunday in the fourth annual women's International Capital Cup Gymnastics Championships at Montgomery College in Rockville.
With a format of optional routines in four categories -- floor exercises, balance beam, uneven bars and vaulting -- the preliminaries will open the competition today at 9 a.m. Finals, which will include the top 10 scorers in each category, will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
Among the top ranked gymnasts competing will be Marcia Frederick, 17, of New Haven, Conn., a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Team, and Lisa Zeis, 16, of Buffalo, an Olympic alternate, Kim Houghton, 16, a past Maryland champion on the balance beam and a member of the host team, Marvateens Gymnastics of Rockville, is another leading contender. h
Gary Anderson, Marvateens elite coach, said scores of the top 10 finalists in each category would probably range from 9.25 up.
Tickets will be available at the door. Prices for the preliminary competition will be $3 for adults and $2 for children under 12. For the finals, the price will be $4 for adults and $2.50 for children.
Final competition in the Junior Capital Cup, which includes intermediate level gymnasts, will begin Sunday at 9 a.m.
