Oregon State will remain No. 1 in this week's polls because it is still unbeaten, but it wasn't easy for the Beavers Saturday night. They had to rally from seven points down in the last 3:19 to catch Washington and then win in overtime, led by Steve Johnson's 38 points.
Embarrassments of the week: Clemson center Larry Nance, touted for all-conference by many, scored two points and had zero rebounds before fouling out in Duke's 75-57 rout of the Tigers. Nance was outplayed and embarrassed by Robinson High School graduate Mike Tissaw, a 6-8 forward playing center for the Blue Devils.
Embarrassment II: Kentucky, frustrated because it was soundly beaten by LSU on Monday, took out its anger on Florida, 102-48, two nights later. bJoe B. Hall unmercifully left his top players in and continued to pour it on a team that uses four freshman extensively.
But, it's hard to feel sorry for Gator Coach Norman Sloan. Six years ago, when his N.C. State team had David Thompson, Sloan called time out in a game the Wolfpack was leading by 22, with 47 seconds left, to berate his starters -- still in the game -- for not hustling.
