James Anderson scored North Carolina A&T's last five points, including a foul shot that clinched the game, to lift the Aggies over Howard tonight, 59-58.
Anderson, a sophomore guard, finished with 18 points in helping the Aggies increase their record to 9-6, 3-3 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Howard is 9-7 and 3-2.
With 14 seconds to play, Howard's James Ratiff stole an A&T inbounds pass and slam-dunked the pull the Bison within 58-56. Howard then fouled Ander with six seconds remaining and Anderson made his first free throw and missed the second. Howard's Larry Spriggs scored at the buzzer.
Howard scored the first two baskets of the second half to lead, 32-27, but James Horace's long jumpers and a tenacious Aggie pressure defense enabled A&T to creep into the lead, 36-35, with 15:10 remaining.
After a Ratiff slam dunk gave Howard a 43-40 lead, N.C. A&T scored six straight points to go back into the lead. Howard regained the lead, 47-46, but A&T stormed back with a basket by Joe Binion and a follow-up shot by Harold Royster. A&T held the lead until Rodney Wright's three-point play for Howard tied the hame, 52-52.
A&T's Harold Royster hit two free throws and, following two missed free throws by Ratiff, the Aggies took a four-point lead on reverse layup by Anderson to make it 56-42 with 1:47 remaining. Spriggs made two free throws at 1:17 to bring Howard within two and then Anderson scored again for a four-point A&T lead. Then came Ratiff's steal.
Ratiff led Howard with 18 points.
