Denis Potvin scored the first of five New York power-play goals and had two assists last night to lead the Islanders to an 8-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings.

Neither Mike Bossy of New York nor Charlie Simmer of Los Angeles, the league's leading goal-scorers, was able to put the puck in the net, but Bossy had two assists to reach the 400-point mark in his NHL career.

Bob Nystrom started a three-goal first-period outburst against King goalie Paul Pageau who was making his first NHL start, at 2:04 on the Islanders' second shot of the game. At 12:01, Potvin scored his 14th goal of the year, a 60-footer. A minute and a half later, Steve Tambellini scored his 16th goal of the year.

AT 9:54 of the second period, Anders Kallur scored a power-play goal on a breakaway. Los Angeles answered on a goal by Jerry Korab at 17:40.

Clark Gillies ignited a four-goal third period with his 24th goal of the season on a power play at 1:06. One minute later, Butch Goring scored his 20th goal, also on a power play, with Potvin getting an assist. Stefan Person added his sixth goal and Wayne Merrick his fifth, Persson's coming on the power play.
