Randy Burkert scored 21 points and Len Hatzenbeller 15 to pace Drexel to a 69-66 upset of La Salle in the first round of the East Coast Conference college basketball playoffs in Philadelphia.

In other ECC first-round games: Bucknell beat West Chester, 79-66, Lewisburg, Pa.; in Bethlehem, Pa., Lehigh beat Delaware, 66-60, and Temple beat Hofstra, 68-63, in Philadelphia.

Drexel now advances to the quarterfinal round Wednesday at American University.

La Salle led its game at halftime, 33-32, but Drexel quickly took the lead in the second half and led by eight, 58-50, midway through the second half.

La Salle tied the score at 61 with 2:49 remaining, but Drexel's Derrick Joynes hit a driving layup with 1:33 to give the Dragons a lead they never relinquished.

Mike Page, a 6-foot-6 senior, scored 16 points and had 10 rebounds in Bucknell's victory. Page scored 12 of his points in the second half and teammate Ray Moss, a 6-6 sophomore, scored all 12 of his points in a 9 1/2 minute stretch of the second period. Bucknell opened up a 69-51 lead with 3:27 remaining and used reserves the rest of the way.

Bucknell plays at Rider Wednesday.

In Bethlehem, Riley and Fred Ketcho of Lehigh each scored 14. Charles Blue and Mike Power had 12 each for the Engineers, who will play Wednesday at Lafayette.

In Philadelphia, the win advanced the Owls (19-6) to a Wednesday night game at St. Joseph's. Hofstra finished with a record of 12-15.
