The new Washington Diplomats will announce two signings later this week, one their top draft choice, the other veteran North American Soccer League defender.
The draft pick is Ole Mikkelsen, a 5-foot-9 striker from UCLA. Mikkelsen, 22, is a two time all-America who scored two goals in the Senior Bowl this past season. Coach Ken Furphy is expected to at least give him a shot at one striker position since Mikkelsen is the kind of player who could team with Paul Cannell, already set as one of the team's strikers.
The other signee will be Peter Carr, 29, a defender the last several seasons with the New England Tea Men. Carr is expected to move into a starting spot on the back line. He can provide the Dips with the kind of experience they lacked last season when they finished 14-18 as the Detroit Express. Carr has been a free agent since the Tea Men moved to Jacksonville.
The Dips are expected to announce several other signings before the start of the season, March 28, at Fort Lauderdale. The team will leave today for England to begin training and a tour. They will not return to the U.S. until March 25.
