Navy's sixth-seeded John Reich advanced to the quarterfinals of the 167-pound weight class and the University of Iowa took an early lead in its quest for a fourth straight national championship today after the preliminary rounds of the 51st annual NCAA wrestling championships at Princeton University.
Reich scored a 28-5 decision over Nebraska's Jeff Dillman in the third preliminary round after winning a 6-2 decision over Yale's Colin Grissom in the second round. He will face third-seeded Mark Schultz of Oklahoma in Friday's quarterfinals.
Iowa led the field of 119 colleges with 27.25 points, followed by third-ranked Iowa State with 23.75 and Oklahoma with 18.5.
Maryland's Tom Jones lost a 10-3 decision to second-seeded Perry Hummel of Iowa State in the third preliminary round of the 167-pound class. Jones, who was unseeded, had pinned the No. 11 seed, Tim Morrison from Rider, in the second round.
Two other Navy wrestlers were eliminated in the final preliminary round tonight. Frank Shaffer lost a 10-6 decision to sixth-seeded Brad Swartz of Oregon State in the 150-pound class and Mark Phillips was beaten, 11-5, by Clarion's fifth-seeded Charlie Heller at 177 pounds
