The University of Maryland women's basketball team received a berth and a first-round bye yesterday in the AIAW national tournament that starts this week.
Despite losing, 64-56, to Cheyney State in the Regional 1-B championship Saturday in Philadelphia, the Terrapins (18-8) received an at-large bid and were seeded seventh. Maryland plays Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Cole Field House against the winner of Wednesday's game between Kentucky and Syracuse.
If Maryland wins on Saturday, it advances to the quarterfinals March 24 at the site of the highest-seeded team playing. The semifinals and final will be held March 27 and 29 in Eugene, Ore.
The top eight seeds in the 24-team field received first-round byes and play at home on Saturday. Louisiana Tech, ranked No. 1 all year, received the top seed. Tennessee, Marylandhs guarterfinal opponent if both win as expected Saturday, is seeded second. Two-time defending champion Old Dominion, which lost twice to Louisiana Tech during the regular season, is third and Southern California is fourth.
Two other Atlantic Coast Conference teams received berths. North Carolina State, which lost to Maryland in the final of the ACC tournament, is seeded 12th and hosts Georgia State in a first-round game Wednesday. Clemson, the regular-season Acc champion, plays at Rutgers.
