Dean Smith, who coached the U.S. Olympic team to the gold medal in 1976 in Montreal, says he would like to see Georgetown's John Thompson coach the Olympic team in 1984.

Thompson, a close friend of Smith, was his assistant coach in 1976 and undoubtedly will receive considerable national attention during the next few seasons with high school superstar Patrick Ewing playing for the Hoyas.

Georgetown is in the process of putting together its schedule for next season, trying to add teams that will create games of national interest that would get on network television.

Thompson has been contacted by Iowa and Wichita State and there has been talk at NBC and CBS about scheduling a game against Virginia. That could create a Ralph Sampson-Ewing matchup, assumping Sampson remains in college. He is expected to play another year at Virginia.

Another scheduling possibility for 1982-83: the beginning of a series between Brigham Young and Maryland. BYU Coach Frank Arnold has been trying so far in vain, to get Lefty Driesell is schedule a home-and-home series. But last week, during the East regional in Atlanta, officials of the two schools met to discuss a series of games.
