John (Rudy) Young, a McKinley Tech graduate and senior to Lehigh University, won the 190-pound championship of the National Collegiate Boxing Association tournament Saturday night with a third-round technical knockout over Jeff McGough.
Young, who celebrates his 22nd birthday on Monday, had little trouble subduing McGough, from the host school, University of Nevada-Reno. "It was my best fight ever," said the former McKinley football captain who suffered the only loss of his three-year amateur career in the first round of last year's nationals.
"It felt a lot of pressure before the bout, but I fought really well from the start."
Air Force won its second straight team championship as Rich Graham and Larry Steuck successfully defended their titles. In addition to Graham, 139, and Steuck, 180, three other Cadets won individual titles.
Navy's Shelton Redden, bidding to become the fourth NCBA boxer to win three championships, fell short of his goal when he lost to Nevada-Reno's Cliff Raymond in the 172-pound final.
In the team standings, Air Force finished with 39 points. West Chester State of Pennsylvania was second with 20, followed by Nevada-Reno with 18, Penn State and Lehigh with 10, University of California with 6 and the Naval Academy with 5.
