The Durham Bulls scored four runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Alexandria Dukes, 8-5, last night at Four Mile Run Park.
Trailing, 5-4, in the top of the ninth, Durham (9-3) rallied to win its seventh straight. Pinch-hitter Tom Thompson started the rally with a single to left field. With one out, Duke pitcher Bob Adkins hit Gary Cooper in the left leg, sending him to first. Designated hitter Kevin Rigby then knocked in pinch-runner Mike Garcia with a single up the middle.
Ronnie Rudd's sacrifice fly to left field brought home Cooper to pull the Bulls ahead. Miguel Sosa's single scored Rigby and Brad Komminsk, who had walked.
Alexandria pulled ahead of the Bulls in the seventh. Trailing, 4-2, with two out and Angel Rodriguez on second, Geronimo Blanco doubled home Rodriguez and Andy Sniath tied the game, 4-4, with a single down the left-field line to score Blanco. Rafael Belliard then doubled home Sniath.
Durham's Jeff Dedmon pitched a perfect game up until the fifth inning, when Alexandria's Jim Feld hit a home run over the left-field fence on the first pitch of the inning.
