Cecil Cooper and Larry Hisle each doubled in a run as Milwaukee built a 4-1 lead at Anaheim and then withstood late home runs by Rick Burleson and Don Baylor.
Mike Caldwell (3-2) received relief help from Rollie Fingers with two out in the ninth after allowing Baylor's homer. Fingers recorded his second save. Steve Renko (1-1) took the loss.
Robin Yount and Cooper delivered back-to-back doubles with one out in the first inning for Milwaukee's first run. A passed ball moved Cooper to third and he scored on Ben Oglivie's sacrifice fly. California scored a run in the bottom of the inning when Rod Carew doubled and scored on Fred Lynn's two-out single.
The Brewers scored two runs in the sixth. Yount singled and took second when Dan Ford robbed Oglivie of a homer with a catch in the right field corner. Hisle doubled to the gap in right center field to score Yount. Don Money's single after an infield hit by Gorman Thomas brought Hisle home.
Burleson led off the sixth for California with his second homer of the season. Baylor hit his second of the year in the ninth.
