Right-hander Martin Bau;m (4-5) pitched a four-hitter, striking out six and walking four, to lead the Winston-Salem Red Sox to a 4-3 victory over Alexandria tonight, knocking the Dukes out of the Carolina League Northern Division lead.

The Dukes trail Hagerstown, a 4-3 winner tonight over Durham, by a half game.

Baum's only problem was home runs. Duke John Schaive hit his fifth homer of the season off Baum in the fourth and Jim Felt hit his 10th in the seventh for Alexandria's final run.

With the Dukes ahead, 2-1, in the fourth, Lee Pruitt of the Red Sox walked and moved to second on Marc Sullivan's one-out single. Alexandria losing pitcher Bob Adkins was charged with a two-out balk and Tony Stevens' single to right gave the Red Sox a 3-2 lead.

The Red Sox scored their final run in the sixth when Jeff Hunter hit a one-out triple to right and scored on Parker Wilson's single to left.

The Dukes opened the scoring when Connor McGehee doubled to right in the first, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Bob Miscik's sacrifice fly to right.
