Jane Abood, 19, of Kenwood shot a one-over- par 75 to win the medal in the qualifying round of the Women's District Golf Association tournament yesterday at Belle Haven Country Club.
Pam Smyth of Congressional won the senior division medal -- for players 55 or older -- by defeating Betty Looney of Army Navy in a one-hole playoff. Both players shot 84.
Seventy-six golfers braved blistering heat and late-afternoon torado warnings to compete in the opening day of the 54th annual tournament.
Only three scores were in the 70s. Fran Shultz of Army Navy shot a 78 and Sally Voss of Congressional, the WDGA the Champion in 1978 and 1979, shot a 79. Most of the scores were in the high 90s or above. Defending champion Karen Jones of Argyle is an automatic qualifier for match play, which begins today.
Abood managed to avoid most of the pitfalls.
"I putted well, played pretty smart in the wind and when I did get in trouble I made sure I saved my bogeys," said Abood, who birdied the third, eighth and 18th holes.
Abood is a recent graduate of Penn State University, where she had a golf scholarship. She has been playing seven years.
