Matt Tyner hit a grand slam home run in the fifth inning to lead the Hagerstown Suns to an 8-6 victory tonight over the Alexandria Dukes in a Carolina League game.
Neil Herrick led off the fifth for the Suns with a single to left field off starter Tim Burke. Burke retired the next two men on a ground out and a strikeout, but Paul Croft walked after Burke threw a wild pitch, advancing Herrick to third.
Burke then walked Bill Butler to fill the bases. Burke was replaced by Rich Leggatt, who yielded Tyner's homer.
Alexandria took an early lead with one run in the second inning and three runs in the fifth. In the fifth, Geronimo Blanco led off with a walk and Angel Rodriguez scored him with a double over the third base bag. Ken Ford Followed with a double, scoring Blanco, and Andy Snaith singled in Ford for a 4-2 Alexandria lead.
But Hagerstown rallied with four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth with a double and John Pavlik followed with a single, putting men on first and third.Wotus scored on a throwing error by rodriguez, and Bill Butler followed with a single to make the score 8-4.
In the ninth, Alexandria scored a pair of runs when John Schaive and Ford doubled in runs. But reliever Ramon Romero struck out Jim Felt and Snaith to ensure the victory and pick up his eighth save.
