John Schaive's 12th-inning single scored Rafael Belliard to give the Alexandria Dukes a 7-6 victory over the Hagerstown Suns yesterday at Four Mile Run Park.
Peter Hamner (5-3) earned the victory with five innings of one-hit relief pitching. He struck out four.
Belliard opened the 12th with a bloop single to center and was sacrificed to second. After Ron Wotus was intentionally walked and Jeff Burton struck out, Hagerstown loser Mike Wright (2-3) was replaced by Alec McCullock. Schaive sent a 1-2 offering into left field for the game-winner.
The Dukes had taken a 6-3 lead in the fifth inning when they scored six runs. Ken Ford led off with a double and scored on Angel Rodriguez's single. Andy Snaith and Belliard singled to load the bases and Connor McGehee's 400-foot single scored Rodriguez with the second Duke run. Burton then got his first Duke home run, a grand slam.
The Suns tied the game in the eighth inning. Dave Rivera singled and went to second on a passed ball. Scott Kuvinka and Al Pardo followed with singles, Rivera scoring on Pardo's hit. The two base runners moved up on a wild pitch and Kuvinka scored when Kurt Fabrizio grounded out. Dave Corman's sacrifice fly to deep center field tied the score at 6-6.
