Rick Manning, Ron Hassey and Toby Harrah knocked in two runs each for Cleveland to pace a 15-single attack at Boston that knocked the Red Sox out of their one-day share of the lead in the American League East.

Manning delivered a two-run single to cap a four-run first inning off loser Dennis Eckersley (9-7), whose ERA during daytime starts this season is 7.48. Jorge Orta began the spurt with a single and Mike Hargrove, Von Hayes and Harrah followed with singles to make it 1-0. A Hassey ground out made it 2-0 and then Manning dumped a single to right to make it 4-0.

The Indians added single runs in the third on an RBI single by Hassey, in the fifth on an RBI single by Harrah and in the seventh on a run-scoring single by Hargrove to make a winner out of Rick Waits (8-9). Dan Spillner pitched the final 2 1/3 innings to notch his seventh save.

The Red Sox scored three runs in the third inning on an RBI single by Jim Rice and a two-run double by Carl Yastrzemski, the 600th two-base hit of his career.
