Minnesota's Jim Gallery kicked four field goals, including a 27-yarder with 2:22 left, to lead the Gophers to a 12-10 upset of No. 7 Iowa in a Big Ten game yesterday in Iowa City.

The victory, Minnesota's fourth straight over the Hawkeyes, improved the Gophers' record to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the conference. Iowa is 5-2 and 3-1.

Minnesota's winning drive began at its 42 with 7:19 left in the game. Quarterback Mike Hohensee completed a 13-yard pass to Chester Cooper and ran 15 yards to give the Gophers a first down on the Iowa 30.

Five running plays brought the ball to the 10 before Gallery's field goal.

Minnesota Coach Joe Salem praised his defense, which held Iowa to 204 yards. He also gave credit to Iowa sportswriters.

"I'd like to thank all the Iowa writers," Salem said. "They were all writing about Iowa and the Rose Bowl last week and not many were even mentioning Minnesota."

Minnesota took a 9-0 halftime lead on three field goals by Gallery. The Gophers held Iowa to 45 yards and two first downs in the first half.
