Jessie Clark ran one yard for a touchdown with 7:57 to play and defensive end Billy Ray Smith made two key fourth-quarter plays to rally the 16th-ranked Razorbacks to an SWC victory in College Station, Tex.
Clark's touchdown spoiled the performance by A&M quarterback Gary Kubiak, who completed 19 of 21 passes for 233 yards and had the Aggies on the brink of a major upset.
But Arkansas freshman quarterback Brad Taylor guided the Hogs on a penalty-marred 91-yard drive to turn the game around. Taylor twice passed 17 yards to wide receiver Mark Mistler to keep the march going. Mistler's second catch came as the Hogs faced third and 12 at the A&M 38-yard line.
The Aggies came back twice in the fourth quarter. But first Smith dropped Kubiak for a one-yard loss on fourth down with 4:56 to play. Then, after Kubiak had passed the Aggies to Arkansas' 42, Smith caused the A&M quarterback to fumble and defensive end Ron Faurot recovered.
Arkansas upped its SWC record to 5-2, 8-2 overall, and remained in the running for the SWC title and a Cotton Bowl berth. The Aggies, 3-3 in SWC games, 5-4 overall, were all but eliminated from the conference race.
