Andre Gaddy scored 28 points and George Mason held off a late rally to defeat the Australian national team, 76-72, in an exhibition game last night at George Mason.

Gaddy, a 6-foot-10 senior center who was redshirted last year after breaking his thumb in the season's second game, scored 26 of his points in the first 27 minutes as Mason built a 63-51 lead.

But the Australian team, led by forward Ian Davies, pulled within 69-67 with 3:46 to play.

Consecutive baskets by Mike Shannon and Carlos Yates, an All-Met at Flint Hill High School, gave Mason a six-point lead. Davies' jump shot moved the Australians within four with two minutes left, but he fouled out 30 seconds later and two free throws by Terry Henderson secured the win for the Patriots.

"I'm pleased with some things we did, and not so pleased with some others," said Mason Coach Joe Harrington. "We had two stretches where we should have put them away and didn't. But overall, I'm happy with the win."

Gaddy shot 13 of 18 from the floor and led both teams with 11 rebounds. Yates scored 14 points and Andy Bolden 11 for the Patriots.
