Earl Jones scored 36 points, 20 in the first half, and Michael Britt had 24 as the University of the District of Columbia routed Elizabeth City, 108-87, last night at the UDC Physical Activity Center.

Jones scored easily against the shorter Vikings in the first half, making nine of 11 shots as UDC, ranked fourth in the Division II poll, held a 46-35 halftime advantage. That was as close as Elizabeth City got the rest of the way.

"Jones just did what he wanted to us inside," said Elizabeth City Coach Bobby Vaughn. "We just didn't have the height to match up with them." Jones made 13 of 19 field goal attempts and all 10 foul shots.

When the Viking defense began to concentrate on stopping Jones in the second half, Britt took over. During a three minute span, the 6-foot-7 forward scored eight points to give UDC (10-2) a 60-44 lead with 15 minutes remaining.

From that point, Elizabeth City played spectator to the Firebirds' fast breaks and dunks.

Britt made 11 of 17 shots and led all rebounders with 17. Jones' 36 points were two shy of his career best.

Elizabeth City (3-4) was led by Darrell Brown with 15 points and Robert Wyche with 14.
