James Ratiff scored 25 points and Howard survived a second-half rally to give the Bison a 57-48 victory over Jersey City College last night at Burr Gymnasium.

The Bison (5-5) led by 18 points, 36-18, following a layup by Ed Swails with 14:31 left in the game. Then the Gothics made their move.

Jersey City outscored Howard, 29-15, and managed to reduce the Bison lead to four, 51-47, with 51 seconds left. Mark Davis led the Jersey City surge with 11 points and Greg Rucker had four unanswered points.

Ratiff then countered with a basket for a 53-47 Bison lead with 43 seconds left. A free throw by David Martin cut the lead to five, 53-48, with 22 seconds left. But Swails sank two free throws with 13 seconds left and Rodney Wright added two more with one second remaining.

Howard led, 28-14, at the half as Ratiff and James Terry had 10 points each before intermission. The Division III visitors contributed to the lead by shooting only 30 percent from the field.

Howard also won the rebound battle, 29-23, against the smaller Gothics. Ratiff led the way with nine. Wright was the bison assist leader with 11.
