Tom Fossile of West Chester State made the first of two foul shots with four seconds left as the Rams survived Howard's rally and won, 70-68, last night before 350 in West Chester, Pa.
Fossile's shot came after Howard, which trailed by as many as 13 points, moved within 69-68 with 15 seconds left on Ed Swails' shot. Howard then fouled guard Sidney Jones, who missed the first foul shot of a one and one with 10 seconds left. The Bison took the rebound, but, with five seconds left, Swails was called for charging. The Rams passed the ball in bounds and the Bison fouled Fossile.
The Rams (5-8) outscored Howard, 9-0, in a three-minute stretch early in the first half for a 13-6 lead. Guard Rick Gillam and forward Kevin Givens, high scorers for the Rams with 20 points each, scored five and four points, respectively, in the spurt. After Howard closed within 17-14 midway in the first half, Gillam and Givens again went on a tear, scoring nine of the Rams' next 10 points as Howard was outscored, 10-2, over the next three minutes.
James Ratiff led the Bison (5-6) with 15 points, but fouled out with three minutes left with Howard trailing, 61-52.
