Ed Sloane scored a career-high 26 points today and American University won its fifth straight, defeating Lehigh, 85-70, in an East Coast Conference game.

The Eagles improved their ECC record to 6-1, 10-5 overall. Lehigh is 1-4, 7-7.

Sloane, a junior, scored 12 points and teammate Mark Nickens had 14 of his 24 points as AU moved ahead, 44-32, by halftime. Lehigh had taken an early 20-12 lead, making 10 of its first 11 shots. AU then scored 16 straight points over a six-minute span to move ahead, 28-20, with five minutes remaining in the first half.

AU, 15th in the nation in field goal shooting with a .543 percentage, improved its average by making 36 of 62 shots.

The closest Lehigh could get in the second half was nine, 46-37, with 17:19 to play, before AU gradually pulled away. American's largest lead came with 1:16 to play when reserve guard Jay Samonsky made a pair of free throws for an 82-60 lead.

Nickens, the nation's 16th-leading scorer with a 21.1 average, made 10 of 17 shots and led AU in rebounding with seven. Sloane made 11 of 20 shots and AU playmaker Gordon Austin had eight assists. Forward Charlie Blue led Lehigh with 21 points.
