Mike Wilson of California State made two free throws with 1:25 remaining to finish the scoring as the Vulcans upset the University of the District of Columbia, 55-54, tonight.

Earl Jones, averaging 25.2 points going into the game, scored 11 and was called for two technical fouls.

California State had success with a sagging zone defense that limited Jones and UDC's other high scorer, Michael Britt. Britt was held to 11 points.

UDC committee 20 turnovers, the Vulcans 17.

The only time UDC held the lead was in the last five minutes. Jones put the Firebirds ahead, 52-51, on a free throw, then teammate Greg Carson stole the ball and Jones made two more free throws to give UDC a 54-51 advantage.

Wilson's 12-foot jump shot with 4:11 left closed California State to 54-53. With 1:25 remaining, Wilson was fouled by Kenny Payne and made both foul shots to give California State the lead.

UDC (11-4) had the ball twice more, but gave it up on a traveling violation by Jones and a charging foul by Britt.

Carson led UDC with 14 points. Bruce Gwyn led California State (6-10) with 15.
