Defenseman Timo Blomqvist and winger Todd Bidner climbed on the up escalator yesterday and rejoined the Washington Capitals, following brief tours of duty with the Hershey Bears.
Heading down to the American League farm club were winger Tony Cassolato and defenseman Jay Johnston.
Blomqvist, who started the season in Washington, has served three separate terms in Hershey, the most recent commencing on Jan. 6. In 25 games with the Capitals, he has recorded one goal and six assists, with a minus nine rating.
Bidner suffered a broken left leg when he was boarded by Minnesota's Steve Payne on Nov. 4 and has been in Hershey since Jan. 9 working his way back into shape. He scored one goal in five games with Washington.
Cassolato had one goal and four assists in 12 games, with a plus-one rating. He collected three points in his first two appearances after being recalled a second time on Jan. 2, but had been used infrequently since.
Johnston saw little action in three games last week after being called up as a numerical replacement for injured Rick Green. Green is expected to return to action tonight when the New York Rangers visit Capital Centre for a 7:30 contest, although he still was experiencing some tenderness in his sore shoulder yesterday.
Tonight's game marks the start of an eight-game road trip for the Rangers, who lead the Capitals by 17 points, although they have been able to beat Washington only once in five meetings. Over the last five weeks the Rangers are 9-4-3, with two losses and two ties coming against the Capitals.
Remaining in Hershey, among others, are former Capitals Jean Pronovost and Tom Rowe.
Pronovost is the only Bear who has scored a goal against each of the other 10 teams in the American League. He has a total of 13 since being exiled Nov. 16. Rowe has six goals and four assists in six games since he signed a Hershey contract after being paid off by Hartford. Rowe also has been penalized 61 minutes and is in the midst of a two-game suspension resulting from a double game misconduct in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on Friday.
