Center Dan Ruland scored a career-high 24 points to lead James Madison over George Mason, 75-59, tonight.
It was the sixth straight victory for the Dukes and the second loss in a row for the Patriots. James Madison has defeated George Mason nine straight times.
Freshman guard Carlos Yates again led George Mason with 22 points. Mike Shannon scored 13 and Andre Gaddy 11 for the losers.
James Madison went ahead for good with 11:58 remaining in the first half, 19-17, on a layup by Linton Townes.
Madison outscored Mason, 15-0, during a six-minute stretch in the first half to built a 42-27 halftime advantage. Darrell Jackson of Richmond had six points during the spree and finished with 12 points.
The closest Mason came in the second half was 11 points, when Gaddy scored on a dunk with 4:19 remaining to cut the score to 60-49. The Patriots could not threaten thereafter.
Ruland, a 6-foot-8 junior center, made nine of 10 shots from the floor.
George Mason is 8-9; Madison, which lost in the second round of last year's NCAA tournament, is 15-3.
Yates, who has led the Patriots in scoring nine times this year, leads the team in scoring with a 16.7 average. He has averaged 22 points in his last nine games. Yates was nine of 14 from the field and was often double-teamed.
