Gudmund Olsen of Mount Saint Mary's surpassed his collegiate pentathlon record and scored 3,980 points at the Princeton Relays. In surpassing his 3,925 score at the 1982 Toronto Invitational, Olsen ran the 55-meter hurdles in 7.9, placed first in the long jump in 22-9 3/4, won the shot put in 51-1, tied for first in the high jump at 6-6 1/2 and ran a personal best 1,000-meters in 2:44.7 . . . Mary Decker set a record in the women's 3,000-meter run in the Los Angeles Times Indoor Games. She ran the 3,000 meters in 8 minutes 47.3 seconds to break the record of 8:50.8 set in 1980 by Grete Waitz. Janine McGregor tied the record in the women's 500-meter run with a time of 1:03.3. Renaldo Nehemiah easily won the 60-yard hurdles at the Games, clocked in 6.96 seconds. Tonie Campbell was second in 7.17 while Greg Foster was ailing and missed the race. UCLA's Jeanette Bolden won the 60-yard dash in 6.66, leading all the way; Maureen Magee shot by early leader Emi Akimoto after the second hurdle to take the women's 60-yard hurdles in 7.68 and Darwin Cook of Southern Cal won the men's 60-yard dash in 6.18.
