Mike Sanders scored 20 points and Kenny Fields stole the ball with six seconds to play to cement a 48-47 home victory for UCLA over upset-minded Notre Dame. UCLA's Rod Foster, on a driving layin, made the last score of the game with 4:05 left.

Notre Dame never scored in the last 11 minutes. The Irish got the ball with 56 seconds to play but could not get off a shot. Fields swiped a pass with :006 showing and, fouled, missed the free throw. Notre Dame guard John Paxson raced upcourt and missed a half-court shot at the buzzer. He had made a 45-footer at the first-half buzzer.

Sanders hit eight of 10 shots for 18 points in the first half when the Bruins came from six points down to take a 31-30 halftime lead.

UCLA broke to a five-point lead early in the second half but fell behind, 45-39, as the Irish scored 11 straight points in 5:27.

Paxson and center Cecil Rucker from Washington, D.C., led Notre Dame with 12 points each. Bill Varner had nine for the Irish and Foster nine for the Bruins, now 14-5 and winners their last eight games.
