Guard Bernard Perry made a 28-foot jump shot at the buzzer to give Howard University a 51-49 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore tonight in a Mid Eastern Athletic Conference game.

The Bison (11-9 overall, 8-3 MEAC), down, 45-36, with 6:33 left in the game, outscored the Hawks the rest of the way, 15-4. Perry, who finished with a team-high 18 points, and James Terry scored six points each in the run.

Terry started the rally with a dunk. Ed Swails made a steal on the Hawks' next possession and passed to Rodney Wright, who completed a three-point play. After another steal by Swails, Perry scored on an 18-foot shot.

UMES (5-15 overall, 3-7 conference) got only one shot its next time down court, and Terry's basket following an offensive rebound tied the score, 45-45, with 4:04 remaining.

An errant Eastern Shore pass led to another 18-footer by Perry, and two missed UMES free throws were followed by a bank shot by Terry to give the Bison a 49-45 lead with 1:25 left.

Gerald Best scored on both shots of a one and one to cut the UMES deficit to 49-47 with 1:18 to play. Howard then missed the first shots of two one and ones, allowing Best's 18-footer with 29 seconds remaining to tie the score, 49-49.

Howard held for the final shot, taking a timeout with three seconds left to set up Perry's game winner.
