Undefeated Swift Attraction, a 3-year-old filly by Lord Gaylord, won her fourth straight race today, running away from eight rivals to win the $30,000-added Flirtation Stakes at Pimlico by five lengths.
Jorge Tejeira hand-rode the bay to the wire in 1:10 1/5 for the six furlongs over a fast strip. By way of comparison, Northrop, a male contender for the Preakness Stakes, won an earlier six-furlong race today in 1:11.
Tough to Touch was second, a nose before French and Bold. Swift Attraction took four-fifths of a second off the Flirtation record set by Double Gate Lady last year. The winner paid $2.80.
The victor started slowly, but took the lead in the backstretch from Somerset Lass, part of a three-horse entry trained by King T. Leatherbury.
Swift Attraction turned the half mile in 45 3/5 and was running easily turning for home. A final quarter of 24 3/5 assured the victory.
Owner Jim Lewis said, "She's proved herself on various racing surfaces and has set record times for stakes races in her last two starts. She goes next in the Hilltop Stakes at Pimlico on April 12. She's not quite seasoned enough for the likes of Before Dawn, but we're working on it."
