The Howard University men dominated the college division and John Shields led Ballou High School to three first-place finishes in the eighth annual Howard University relays yesterday at Coolidge.

The Bison won nine of 10 events with runners Robert Brown and Ruebin Williams figuring in five events each.

Howard's mile relay team of Kenny Wilson, Bernard Oliver, David Charlton and Oliver Bridges won in 3:11.8, a tenth of a second off the meet record the Bison set last year.

Perennial track power Morgan State opted not to compete for the first time, thus diluting the competition.

In the high school division, Shields easily won the 220 in 23.1. The powerful senior also ran the first leg of the victorious 880- and 440-yard relay teams. The winning time of 43.2 in the 440 broke the meet record of 43.5 set by Eastern in 1976.

The McKinley girls' all-America quartet of Monique Miller, Rene Gordon, Wanda Eades and Darnetta Green ran an exceptional 1:42.7 in the 880 relay, eclipsing their record of 1:44.8 set last year.

In the boys division, Anacostia, running without top quarter miler John Hugee, easily won the mile relay in 3:23.3.
