Andy Snaith and Ken Ford hit home runs in a five-run Alexandria seventh inning and the Dukes withstood a late Lynchburg rally to defeat the Mets, 9-7, in a Carolina League game last night at Four Mile Run Park.
Snaith broke a 3-3 tie with his first homer, leading off the inning against starter and loser Rich Webster (0-2). After two were out, Rick Renteria reached base on an error and Tom Miller replaced Webster.
Miller did not retire a batter. Nelson DeLaRosa walked and Joe Orsulak hit an RBI single to left. Ford then hit Miller's first pitch 400 feet, over the right-center field fence, for a three-run homer and an 8-3 lead. Alexandria added a run in the eighth on three singles and an error.
Lynchburg made it interesting with a four-run rally in the ninth, aided by two Dukes' errors. Roger Frash, John DelMonte and pinch hitter Duane Evans all singled, producing one run. Reliever Jeff Zaske then threw a wild pitch, scoring DelMonte. Zaske then retired two batters before Randy Milligan and Rob Gilles reached on infield errors, scoring two runs. Kevin Mitchell's hard line drive to left ended the game.
Chris Green earned his first win, pitching seven innings, allowing eight hits, two earned runs and striking out six.
