Bjorn Borg defeated Vincent Van Patten and Guillermo Vilas upset John McEnroe in Tokyo yesterday to move into today's final of the $250,000 Suntory Cup tennis tournament.

Later, Van Patten beat McEnroe, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, to win third place.

Borg, who announced Friday he will not play at Wimbledon, where he is a five-time champion, won, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, and Vilas triumphed, 6-4, 6-4, to complete a sweep of U.S. semifinalists. The winner of the Borg-Vilas match gets $110,000.

"Everything was bad with me today," McEnroe said. "I think Vilas played better than me. I also think he hit better."

In Houston, Jose-Luis Clerc rallied with a strong backhand to defeat Peter McNamara, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3, and advance to the final of the $300,000 River Oaks tournament. Clerc will face top-seeded Ivan Lendl, who gained his 15th consecutive tournament final by beating Andres Gomez, 6-3, 6-2 . . . In Los Angeles, Jimmy Connors kept Victor Amaya on the base line most of the match and won, 6-2, 6-4, to gain the final of the $200,000 Pacific Southwest Open. He will meet Mel Purcell, who beat Brian Teacher, 1-6, 7-6, 6-2.
